Abstract
The worst-case electromagnetic coupling between a 900 MHz mobile telephone and implanted pacemaker with unipolar catheter was investigated by computer simulation. The model comprises a dielectric block with embedded pacemaker and a half-wavelength dipole situated above the surface. A pacemaker connector was modelled as a small loop and a catheter as the lossy transmission line. This model was combined with Finite Difference Time Domain calculation of the field induced within dielectric block. The analysis with 2W transmitter gave the peak interference voltage of 1 V for the connector and 0.3 V for the catheter. These results show that the pacemaker connector is more responsible for coupling than a catheter which agrees with previously published experimental results.
