Abstract
Rechargeable Mg-metal batteries are attractive owing to their high volumetric capacity, safety, and resource abundance, yet their development is limited by severe polarization and sluggish cathode kinetics. Herein, a cation-vacancy engineering strategy is achieved through Mg substitution in NASICON-type NaTi2(PO4)3. The optimized Mg0.25Na0.5Ti2(PO4)3 cathode exhibits low voltage hysteresis (0.05 V), high rate capability (87% capacity retention at 500 mA g−1), and long-term cycling stability (81% capacity retention after 500 cycles). A proof-of-concept pouch cell delivers a low polarization voltage of 0.067 V. Mechanistic investigations reveal a Mg−Na hybrid-ion storage mechanism, in which Na+ predominantly governs the reversible cathode reaction while Mg metal undergoes reversible stripping/plating at the anode. Vacancy engineering effectively regulates ion transport and structural reversibility, enabling highly stable electrochemical operation. This work demonstrates vacancy engineering as an effective strategy for developing high-performance NASICON cathodes for Mg-metal battery systems.

期刊介绍:
ACS Energy Letters is a monthly journal that publishes papers reporting new scientific advances in energy research. The journal focuses on topics that are of interest to scientists working in the fundamental and applied sciences. Rapid publication is a central criterion for acceptance, and the journal is known for its quick publication times, with an average of 4-6 weeks from submission to web publication in As Soon As Publishable format.
ACS Energy Letters is ranked as the number one journal in the Web of Science Electrochemistry category. It also ranks within the top 10 journals for Physical Chemistry, Energy & Fuels, and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.
The journal offers several types of articles, including Letters, Energy Express, Perspectives, Reviews, Editorials, Viewpoints and Energy Focus. Additionally, authors have the option to submit videos that summarize or support the information presented in a Perspective or Review article, which can be highlighted on the journal's website. ACS Energy Letters is abstracted and indexed in Chemical Abstracts Service/SciFinder, EBSCO-summon, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Portico.
