On November 19, 1985, a seminar on the topic "Mind and the Brain: Philosophical Aspects" was held at the M. V. Lomonosov State University at Moscow. The past development of ethical knowledge has shown that in determining the future orientations of ethical research, the multiplicity of interconnecting links between ethics, the philosophy of morals, and the whole of intellectual culture have yet to receive sufficient study. At the same time, the sociocultural legacy—the framework within which philosophical thought lies—syncretically embraces science, art, and philosophy. Remaining "beyond the sequence" of philosophical abstraction, science and art are present (in a sublated form) as the sociocultural background of ethical thought. Inasmuch as morals permeate the most diverse forms of the practical and intellectual activity of humanity, one should neither restrict the investigation of it strictly to the boundaries of philosophical-ethical analysis, nor limit its study to the special, concrete human sciences. The Twenty-seventh Congress of the CPSU has set the course to guide the present development of our society and determine its short- and long-term prospects. The Congress took place at a watershed in the development of the country and the contemporary world as a whole. It generalized the accumulated domestic and international experience in socialist construction, formulated a strategy to achieve the triumph of the ideals of communism, peace, and progress, made a creative contribution to the development of Marxist-Leninist theory, and formulated a complex of problems to be resolved by social scientists and philosophers. A "round table" on the theme "The Dialectics of the Social and the Biological: Problems and Conceptions " was held in 1985 in Sevastopol ' under the auspices of the local section of the Philosophical Society of the USSR. The topic of the relationship between the social and the biological in the development of man in society is an important one in view of the heightened role of scientific knowledge in general, and of social knowledge in particular, in implementing the CPSU's program for accelerating the country's socioeconomic development. [Its importance lies] not only in the way in which these two principles, these two "contiguous" but qualitatively different forms of organization and movement of matter—the biological and the social—are linked together in man and society, but also in the practical question of how both these factors are integrated in the process of forming the all-around and harmoniously developed individual.

The universal social significance of the phenomena of artistic culture has its own specific features. Often it is something standing alone, an "exception to the rule," which nonetheless gives expression to some important tendency in the evolution of literature and art. This has been the case, in particular, with the works of Vladimir Vysotskii, who only a short time ago still seemed to some (and to many even today) as some almost peripheral offshoot of the real artistic process, a kind of "nonsense," having no direct bearing on the social problems and questions bothering us. In light of the lessons of truth, interpreted and experienced by the public under the impact of the recent party congress, the situation is literally changing before our very eyes.

At the contemporary stage in the development of humanity, an increasing number of problems, affecting both individuals and society as a whole and having in the past had a local character, are acquiring in the 1970s and 80s—an epoch of ever-accelerating scientific and technical progress and further socio-economic development—a global character, touching to one degree or another the interests of all countries and peoples. Such problems cause anxiety for wide circles of the public and are attracting the increasing attention of scientists, government figures, and political activists. The prospects for humanity and society on the threshold of the third millenium depend upon how fruitful the scientific analysis of global problems and the efficiency of practical measures will be.

One of the most important theoretical and ideological tasks of Marxist philosophy is the critical study of the philosophical thought of the West. In the second half of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, the ideological struggle on the international arena entered a new stage. It was characterized by the turn of the forces of imperialist reaction away from the politics of detente to the politics of the "cold war," to the active opposition to the forces of peace, democracy, and socialism. The struggle of ideas has swung back and forth in the context of, on the one hand, a resurgence of reactionary anticommunist tendencies, and the stimulation and expansion of antimilitary movements and the struggles of the peoples for peace and socialism on the other.

The well known English writer Samuel Johnson† lived in the age of Enlightenment when philosophy, understood as the critical activity of the mind, extended its influence to all types of moral and mental activity and occupied the minds of the poet and the dramatist, the artist and the scientist, the pedagogue and the social activist. Both by virtue of the multiplicity of his interests and the circumstances of his life, Johnson was unable to devote himself entirely to philosophy. But, being an encyclopedically educated man, he constantly lived by it and thought about the world around him in a philosophical way. His arguments, which had a philosophical character, were linked with practical precepts of actual life or passed into them. He was concerned not only with the abstract truthfulness of his writings, but also with their immediate utility for his fellow creatures. As was stressed at the April (1985) Plenum of the CPSU Central Committee, the coming congress will be a landmark stage in the development of the country.
