Nor can there be any talk of eclecticism; the fusion of all areas into a single one would be lethal to science (if science of course were mortal). The more demarcation the better, but an affable demarcation, without a battle at the border.

Interest in Slavophilism has undergone a notable resuscitation in recent decades in the Soviet literature. In the seventies and eighties, collections of works of some of the Slavophiles were published for the first time since the October Revolution.1 Books and articles on Slavophilism have appeared.2 Archival materials have been put into scholarly circulation, scholars find their attention being drawn to works of modern foreign authors on Slavophilism, and certain aspects of Slavophile views are often touched upon in current literary criticism. We can agree with the conclusion drawn by I. A. Dudzinskaia in 1983 and shared by N. I. Tsimbaev, namely, that a review of the literature in the recent period "evidences a new stage in the study of Slavophilism."3 However, various aspects of Slavophilism have by no means been dealt with equally, and there are quite a number of disagreements among scholars in their assessments.

"Mysl"‘ Publishers timed the appearance of this book to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Friedrich Engels's work Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy. Engels quite pointedly dubbed the theories which emerged in Germany in the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries as "classical philosophy." It was among the highest achievements of the world's wisdom, and it prepared the ground for the genesis of dialectical and historical materialism. German classical philosophy is the theoretical wellspring of Marxism.

The builders of our new society will concentrate their primary efforts and energy on the improvement of the economic system of socialism, the growth of the productive forces, and the intensification of scientific-technological progress. To what extent it will be possible to accelerate the pace along this unbeaten path will depend on success in mobilizing the vast reserves of the socialist economy.

At a council meeting in 1985 of the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University, a discussion took place on the monographs of Professor A. M. Kovalev entitled Dialectics of the Mode of Production of the Life of Society [Dialektika sposoba proizvodstva obshchestvennoi zhizni] (Moscow, 1982) and Socialism and the Laws of Social Development [Sotsializm i zakonomernosti obshchestvennogo razvitiia] (Moscow, 1983). The dean of the faculty and chairman of the council, Professor A. D. Kosichev, said that the work schedule of the faculty provided for discussion of current philosophical publications. This is important both for raising the intellectual and scholarly level of teaching and for the scholarly investigations themselves. The party committee of Moscow State University directed the attention of the faculty during the report of the Department of Scientific Communism to the necessity for an active discussion of the scholarly output of instructors in the faculty. This book is the last work of the well-known Soviet philosopher A. S. Bogomolov, who died prematurely. It was constructed on the basis of the course lectures in the history of philosophy which he gave over a period of many years to students of the Philosophy Faculty of Moscow State University. In essence, the book is a unique summing up of the author's investigations in ancient philosophy.

The publication in Russian of this book by the American philosopher Stephen Toulmin (edited with an introduction by Prof. P. E. Sivokon') is convincing evidence of the growing interest of the Soviet philosophical public in such a comparatively new current in Western philosophy of science as post-positivism, and in the problems which the criticism of this current addresses. The book under review sets forth the main results of the post-positive stage in its author's philosophical evolution. The publication of this work in Russian gives the Soviet reader a chance to acquire a quite thorough notion of the essence of the main ideas of post-positivism in the philosophy of science, their epistemological foundations, and their intellectual orientation.

Important and serious problems are posed by the party today for scholars who study society. In the new edition of the program of the CPSU, it is pointed out in particular that it is necessary to concentrate attention on "the study and comprehensive analysis of the experience amassed in creating a new society in the USSR and in other socialist countries, on the dialectics between the forces and relations of production, on the material and spiritual spheres under conditions of socialism, on the laws of genesis of a communist social formation, and the ways and means of advancement to its higher phase."1

A remarkable phenomenon in our present-day culture has been the broad interest shown in the history of Russian thought, which is continually, and sometimes even from unexpected quarters, showing itself to be of topical interest. Recently, and particularly in connection with the publication of the works of N. F. Fedorov, there has been an exchange of opinions in the pages of various journals with regard to the essence of his philosophical views, revealing not merely conflicting, but in a number of cases mutually exclusive assessments of those views.
