With the rapid growth of number of cores, together with the heterogeneous access latencies, the cost of synchronization and communication between distant components keeps growing. As more general purpose programs exploit the many-core architectures, the speedup achieved will then be limited by the synchronization needed to access shared objects [2]. When building Internet-scale systems, similar concerns lead to the design of scalable systems that limit global synchronization and operate locally when possible. CRDTs [1] succeed in capturing data types with clear concurrency semantics and are now common components in Internet-scale systems. However, they do not migrate trivially to shared-memory architectures due to high computational costs from merge functions, which becomes apparent once network communication is removed. In this talk, we discuss multi-view data types for shared-memory architectures, that leverages a global-local view model that distinguishes between a local fast state and a distant shared state. By executing operations on the local state without synchronization, while only synchronizing with the shared state when needed, applications can achieve better scalability at the expense of linearizability - the default correctness criteria for concurrent objects.

Monotonicity Types for Distributed Dataflow

The Lasp [2] programming language provides combinator functions such as Union and Intersection for combining set CRDTs. When designing a CRDT combinator, care must be taken to ensure that the combinator is monotone separately in each of its arguments, so that applying it to a tuple of increasing input streams yields an increasing output stream. We consider designing a type system which can prove the monotonicity of CRDT combinators.

The Single-Writer Principle in CRDT Composition CRDT

Multi-master replication in a distributed system setting allows each node holding a replica to update and query the local replica, and disseminate updates to other nodes. Obtaining high availability typically entails allowing replicas to diverge and requires a background mechanism for re-establishing consistency. Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) extend standard sequential data-types with appropriate merge functions, and often can be composed together to create more complex ones. In this work we add a generic CRDT composition approach that explores the single-writer principle. By carefully controlling which part of the composition can be updated by each replica, we can derive efficient designs that cover new use-cases. After introducing the new construction we exemplify some uses, including how to emulate a simple Doodle functionality for selecting a common meeting schedule among different participants.

On the Design of Distributed Programming Models

Programming large-scale distributed applications requires new abstractions and models to be done well. We demonstrate that these models are possible. Following from both the FLP result and CAP theorem, we show that concurrent programming models are necessary, but not sufficient, in the construction of large-scale distributed systems because of the problem of failure and network partitions: languages need to be able to capture and encode the trade-offs between consistency and availability. We present two programming models, Lasp and Austere, each of which makes a strong trade-off with respects to the CAP theorem. These two models outline the bounds of distributed model design: strictly AP or strictly CP. We argue that all possible distributed programming models must come from this design space, and present one practical design that allows declarative specification of consistency trade-offs, called Spry.
