In this article, using Zygmunt Bauman’s postmodern ethics, I will try to answer the question of how much morality is possible in violent situations. First, it describes briefly the characteristics of moral action from the perspective of postmodern ethics, and clarifies what is meant by » violence« here. After these preliminary remarks, it is explained what to do about violence and how to be moral in this interventionalist action. With these clarifications it is finally considered which contemporary conditions prevail for morality in violent situations.

The article tries to problematize Zygmunt Bauman’s understanding of »modernity« since it rests on a social science discourse which is in need of being historicized. As will be shown, the (sociological) concept of »modernity« is a rather new one that was created and then widely used not before the 1970s, a concept which was hardly ever a purely analyti-cal one, but one with enormous political implications. If this is so, then the question should be asked whether Bauman’s oftentimes brilliant sociological insights could be used even more fruitfully if one would re-frain from using this concept.

Zygmunt Bauman: Soziologie unterwegs zur Flüchtigen Moderne 柏曼:社会学走向变幻无常

Zygmunt Bauman has from his beginning in the early sixties followed an interest in clarifying the social meaning and consequences of modernity, postmodernity, and finally, liquid modernity. This process was accompanied by theoretical, methodological, and diagnostical considerations. All of these considerations follow the idea of the centrality of power for the social order to avoid ambivalence as the central issue and problem of all kind of sociation. The social solution for this problem is the avoidance of ambivalence as well as the bifurcation of the social between the haves and the have-nots. Sociology has to react on these circumstances by developing a new methodology and theory of sociation, leaving behind the idea of a united society and opening up to ideas which can grasp liquidity as the central element of sociation. Liquidity is the starting point for the development of a new sociology for the future of society where »all that’s solid melts into air«.

Bauman’s studies contribute significantly to the analysis of the place-time dimensions of the Social from a sociological point of view. Bauman explores how the present is negotiated in relation to the question of the control of place and time, how modernity begins with a fixation on place and how postmodernity develops, where place was perceived on the one hand as limited and on the other as threatened. The article emphasizes that the shifts in the relations of place and time play an important role in Bauman’s work. Zygmunt Bauman links the analysis of the processes of movement with the observation of a released time. For Bauman, »being modern« means being »on the move«. He regards modernity as the impossibility of standing still. Thus he generally conceives modern man as a nomad. Among other things, the article focuses on the relations to perspectives by Kurt Lewin, Walter Benjamin, and Georg Simmel in order to make visible the great importance of cultural practices in Bauman’s research. It becomes obvious that postmodern thinking has given rise to a new, restless utopian thinking. Within the boundaries of postmodernism, the means of modern violence have been persistent, but a fear has been brought up that these means might also be directed against one’s own society. All the more emphatically, the figures typified by Bauman, such as the vagabonds and tourists, seem to crystallize the longing of postmodernism to assure oneself of the limits of violence in daily life.
