We present a new method called the slope nucleation method (SNM) for the growth of high-quality DAST crystals. Electro-optic (EO) measurement shows DAST crystals exhibits five-times sensitivity enhancement as compared to KTiOPO/sub 4/ (KTP) crystals.

We present theoretical and experimental results for a microwave photonic oscillator (MPO) that provides a microwave signal and a modulated optical wave simultaneously, and which can be used as a local oscillator for a coherent Doppler LIDAR operating at 1550 nm.

The atmospheric propagation properties of an 800 nm band optical wireless link are evaluated experimentally. The applicability of an optical wireless link to a radio access network is considered, based on experimental results from the viewpoint of link availability.

We demonstrated the analogue transmission of a 622 Mbps millimeter-wave signal over optical fiber for a broadband fixed wireless access system. The transferred RF signal format was based on four multi-carriers in a 37 GHz band with a 64 QAM modulation. The experiments showed that we can successfully transfer a 622 Mbps millimeter-wave signal over a 10 km fiber with less than 5 dB power penalty for a downlink and less than 4 dB CNR penalty for an uplink.

We present temperature insensitive and low cost transversal filters based on uniform fibre Bragg gratings used as slicing elements of a broadband optical source. The performance of these filters is compared to the laser array approach.

A novel all-fiber bipolar delay line filter is realized in a single-line cascaded high birefringence fiber structure. Optically coherent operation is achieved with suppression of interference noise. Complementary filter outputs give simultaneous lowpass and highpass responses.

We describe two new devices based on whispering gallery mode microresonators. The first device, a multipole filter, is based on coupled microresonators, the frequency of which is trimmed in situ to produce the desired filter function. The second device is based on a lithium niobate microresonator, which can detect applied microwave signals with power as low as 2.5 nW.
