SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the newest and most widespread journalistic practices in contemporary journalism. Making newsworthy the topics most searched for on Google, by journalists known as SEO editors, has given rise to a Google-focused journalistic practice. So-called “Google journalism” appeared in response to the news consumption habits of a large segment of internet users who tend to find everything in Google. This content, known as SEO news, is produced by SEO editors in line with Google trends. The aim of journalists is to turn the keywords and sentences searched for by Google users into news, and the search results into front page fodder. Although they are now widespread journalistic practices in Turkey and the rest of the world, search engine optimization and SEO journalism are still relatively new, and have been considered very little in the literature. The ethical problems created by SEO news have been only minimally assessed, and this study aims to make a contribution to the field. Thus, it considers the troubled relationship between SEO news and professional journalistic principles and ethics in the light of journalists’ direct experience. The study was conducted by means of semistructured interviews with 15 professional journalists working at Hürriyet, Sabah, Habertürk, Sözcü, A Haber, T24 and Diken in Istanbul between the dates of 15-20 January 2018 and 16-22 April 2018. Eight of the journalists were employed as SEO editors, and seven were internet newspaper/news portal managers/editors. In interviews with the journalists, a prepared form was used, and open-ended questions were asked. and throughout the world, search engine optimization and SEO journalism are still new, and have yet to be considered in the literature as journalism per se. Analysis of the ethical problems created by SEO news remains lacking; this study aims to make a contribution to the field. Semi-structured interviews were held with 15 professional journalists employed by Hürriyet, Sabah, Habertürk, Sözcü, A Haber, T24 and Diken, all of whom had personal experience on the topic. According to the study results, journalists see the production of SEO content as a necessity for newspapers to be able to compete in the digital world, despite its negative aspects. Pazarlama Amaçlı Sponsorluk Etkinlikleri ile Tüketici Temelli Marka Değeri Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi: Bir Türk Markası Üzerine Tüketici Araştırması

Gunumuz rekabet piyasasinda stratejik bir halkla iliskiler uygulamasi olan sponsorluk faaliyetleri, markalar tarafindan cesitli iletisim amaclari icin kullanilmaktadir. Bu amaclar halkla iliskiler, reklam ve pazarlama seklinde kendini gostermektedir. Bu dogrultuda arastirmanin amaci; pazarlama amacli sponsorluk faaliyetleri ile tuketici temelli marka degeri arasinda anlamli bir iliski olup olmadigini ve bu iliskinin yonunu ve kuvvetini tespit etmektir. Arastirmada olcek ifadeleri Arcelik markasinin A Milli Takimlar sponsorlugu uzerinden kurgulanmis olup, kolayda ornekleme yontemi vasitasiyla, 412 katilimci ile yuz yuze gorusme yontemi dogrultusunda anket teknigi kullanilarak elde edilen veriler, pazarlama amacli sponsorluk faaliyetleri degiskeni ile tuketici temelli marka degeri baglaminda olcume tabi tutulmustur. Bu dogrultuda, anket verileri ile degiskenler arasindaki iliskilerin anlami, kuvveti ve ortaya konulan hipotezler sinanmistir. Bununla birlikte ilk olarak katilimcilarin demografik degiskenleri frekans analizi yontemi ile test edilmistir. Daha sonra pazarlama amacli sponsorluk faaliyetleri ve marka degeri alt boyutlari arasindaki iliski ve etki duzeyini olcmek amaci ile korelasyon ve basit dogrusal regresyon analizi gerceklestirilmistir. Arastirma bulgularina gore, pazarlama amacli sponsorluk faaliyetleri ile marka degeri alt boyutlari (‘marka sadakati’, ‘algilanan kalite’, ‘marka cagrisimi/bilinirligi’, ‘genel marka degeri’) arasinda anlamli (p=,000) ve orta kuvvette bir iliski oldugu tespit edilmistir. Problems in Media Ethics Education: An Assessment of Syllabi of Undergraduate Courses in Turkey 媒介伦理教育中的问题:土耳其本科课程教学大纲评价

This study explores the syllabi used at communication faculties/departments in Turkey with the goal of examining how media ethics is taught at the undergraduate level. Since 1990s, we have witnessed fundamental changes in the media landscape and the proliferation of communication faculties in Turkey. Despite these changes, curriculum planning involving ethics has received little attention within communication studies. Faculties have tended to orient themselves too much toward the profession and too little toward the academy. We assume that Medya Etiği Eğitiminde Karşılaşılan Sorunlar: Türkiye’deki Ders İzlenceleri Üzerinden Bir Değerlendirme 62 Connectist: Istanbul University Journal of Communication Sciences, 2018, 55: 61-76 EXTENDED ABSTRACT There were 54 communication faculties in Turkey between 2016 and 2017, when we collected data for this study. We managed to obtain information from 50 of them (92%). Of those 50, 20 did not have any freestanding ethics courses. Since 12 out of the 20 were been established within the last couple of years, they have not developed their curricula yet, so there is no information on whether they are planning to offer such a course in the future. The remaining eight faculties have recently changed their curricula, replacing freestanding courses with general ethics courses offered to all university students. In addition, 30 of the 50 facilities have a total of 48 freestanding courses offered in 66 different programs. We collected and analyzed 48 syllabi of these courses for this study. The common components, in descending order of the frequency with which they appear in the syllabi, are listed as follows: Ethics and morality (73%); Self-regulation in the media (44%); Professional ethics (41.5%); Theories of Ethics (33%); New communication technologies/New Media/Internet (31%); Human Rights/Individual Rights/Privacy (31%); Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct (30%); Media Industry/Ownership (30%); The Responsibility of News Media (27%); Ethical Problems of Media in Turkey (27%); Freedom of Information (23%); Reporting Crisis and War (14.5%); Political Communication (14.5%); Discrimination and Hate Speech (14.5%); and Tabloid Journalism (10.5%). It should be noted that the list above provides a composite picture of the components in the 48 syllabi and no one course contains all the components on the list. On closer scrutiny of the components and topics in the 48 syllabi, there seems to be a fairly consistent pattern, at least in terms of subject matter: how ethics is being this trend overemphasizes the realities of the market while ignoring moral reasoning through the role of profession in a democratic political system. Today, the media profession suffers from ownership concentration and politicization. Turkey has a poor record on press freedom mainly because of the methods used by the government to pressure and control media outlets and journalists. Reading Digital News: Hypertextual Usage Habits and Learning Practices Among U.S. Communication Undergraduates 阅读数字新闻:美国传播学本科生的超文本使用习惯和学习实践

Hypertext as a nonlinear, computer-based or digital text that is now used along with conventional, linear printed text and can be described as a relatively advanced text type. Moreover, hypertextuality is among the characteristics which differentiate online news from printed news. While digital writing has become more advanced with hypertextuality, its impact on users’ reading habits has gained importance as an underlying matter. In this context, the present research aims to provide an analysis of users’ experiences of reading digital news in the context of hypertextuality. This study begins by summarizing the studies on hypertextuality and news users. Following this, a case study is presented to analyze newspaper users’ reading habits in a digital setting to propose empirical evidence for the theoretical ideas of poststructuralist thinkers on hypertextuality. This part focuses on the hypertext reception practices of UMASS/Amherst Department of Communication undergraduate students through analysis of their news consumption patterns via an online survey. Based on the findings, this study contributes to the literature regarding journalism, technology, and digital writing by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of reading digital news. Although hypertextuality invites both writers and users to think in a nonlinear and cooperative way, it also leads to polarized opinions and newly emerging ethical issues.

While digital writing has become more advanced with hypertextuality, its impact on users’ reading habits has gained importance as an underlying matter. In this context, the present research aims to provide an analysis of users’ experiences of reading digital news in the context of hypertextuality. This study begins by summarizing the studies on hypertextuality and news users. Following this, a case study is presented to analyze newspaper users’ reading habits in a digital setting to propose empirical evidence for the theoretical ideas of poststructuralist thinkers on hypertextuality. This part focuses on the hypertext reception practices of UMASS/Amherst Department of Communication undergraduate students through analysis of their news consumption patterns via an online survey. Based on the findings, this study contributes to the literature regarding journalism, technology, and digital writing by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of reading digital news. Causes of Drug Use and the Role and Importance of Communicative Approaches during the Addiction Period: A Case Study through Police Records 吸毒原因及成瘾期沟通方法的作用与重要性:以警方档案为例

Drug use has become one of the biggest threats of harm to societies all over the world. There is currently a significant effort to prevent the illegal production, distribution, and consumption of these substances. Its use rapidly develops into a psychological and physiological dependence. Addiction is a condition where individuals continue using a substance despite knowing the risks involved and where they feel a need to increase their continuous dosage, all of which have legal consequences. The effects of legal regulations and law enforcement officers are reasonably significant in the fight against drugs. However, the main factor in this fight is to investigate ways of keeping society away from drugs by taking the necessary measures to prevent drug use. Addressing the subject through the communication paradigm is one of the main points of this struggle. Drug awareness and interpersonal communication begin in the family and continue into the socio-cultural environment. The level and nature of communication in both the family and the close environment are influencing factors for individuals who have drug dependencies. Drug offenses and rates of seizures have shown a statistically significant increase. In the online environment, in particular, children and youngsters are surrounded by news, games, images, and other elements that encourage drug use. Such platforms, as well as family and immediate environmental impacts, require a detailed examination. Family communication and role model communication are important methods to fight and prevent illegal drug use. The data obtained from 24 in-depth interviews indicate that the reasons for the trend towards drug use are: family, an emulation of rolemodels, friendship groups, social collapse, entertainment, curiosity, illness, and social media/easy access over the internet. According to the analysis obtained from verbal examinations of cases, the most prominent among these causes was the family-related cause.

Internet ve Web tabanli uygulamalarla hiz kazanan teknolojik gelismeler, iletisimin boyutunu degistirmis ve etkilesimli bir iletisim ortamini ortaya cikarmistir. Kuskusuz bu durum kurumlarla hedef kitleleri arasindaki iliskilerin gelistirilmesi icin de yeni olanaklar sunmaktadir. Bugun sosyal medyanin ozellikle de sosyal paylasim aglarinin, hayatin her alanina nufuz etmesiyle birlikte kurumla hedef kitleleri arasinda daha etkilesimli bir iletisimin gerceklesmesi mumkun hale gelmistir. Bu nedenle sosyal paylasim aglarinin basinda gelen Facebook’un kurumsal iletisim araci olarak etkilesimli bir sekilde nasil kullanilmasi gerektiginin belirlenmesi oldukca onem tasimaktadir. Bunun icin de oncelikle Facebook’un kullanim amacinin ve paylasilan iceriklerin belirlenmesi gerekmekte daha sonra ise etkilesim unsurunun arastirilmasi gerekmektedir. Bu nedenle Turkiye’de faaliyet gosteren yerli sermayeli havayolu sirketlerinin Facebook kullanimlarinin ortaya konulmasinin amaclandigi calisma iki asamadan olusmaktadir. Calismanin ilk asamasi olan, Facebook’un kurumlar tarafindan daha ziyade tanitim ve promosyon amacli olarak kullanildigina yonelik tespit, “Turkiye’deki havayolu sirketlerinin Facebook’u kurumsal amacli olarak kullanimi” basligi ile arastirmaci tarafindan yayimlanmistir (Turk, 2018). Bir takip calismasi niteliginde olan, calismanin ikinci kismini olusturan bu arastirmada ise Facebook’un etkilesimli bir mecra olarak kullanilmasindaki yeterliligin tespit edilmesi amaclanmaktadir. Alti hava yolu sirketinin kurumsal Facebook hesaplari; nitel arastirma yontemlerinden icerik analizi teknigi ile analize tabi tutulmus ve toplanan veriler betimsel istatistige basvurma yoluyla degerlendirilmistir. Its structure appeals to all age groups and brings with it a broad participation of society. This effect is increased based on the widespread use of smart phones and the development of mobile internet. However, along with its increased usage and the advantages and benefits we enjoy, being online also carries risks. Once uploaded to the Internet, the smallest item of personal data becomes owned generally at that moment. One often neglected and forgotten aspect of Internet and social media use is the threat to privacy and the possibility of damage to one’s private life. The concept of privacy states that individuals have the right to determine to what extent they will share information about their life with other individuals (Yüksel, 2003). One could argue that because technological developments tend to affect new generations the most, it is important to know where teacher candidates stand with regard to privacy, especially those who will train future generations. Understanding their online privacy concerns is important not only because they are role models for their students, but also because it affects the elements of trust in communication with them. Its structure appeals to all age groups and brings with it a broad participation of society. This effect is increased based on the widespread use of smart phones and the development of mobile internet. However, along with its increased usage and the advantages and benefits we enjoy, being online also carries risks. Once uploaded to the Internet, the smallest item of personal data becomes owned generally at that moment. One often neglected and forgotten aspect of Internet and social media use is the threat to privacy and the possibility of damage to one’s private life. The concept of privacy states that individuals have the right to determine to what extent they will share information about their life with other individuals (Yüksel, 2003). One could argue that because technological developments tend to affect new generations the most, it is important to know where teacher candidates stand with regard to privacy, especially those who will train future generations. Understanding their online privacy concerns is important not only because they are role models for their students, but also because it affects the elements of trust in communication with them. ÖZ Günümüz dünyasında teknolojide yaşanan gelişmeler ve internet teknolojisinin getirdiği yenilikler, bireylerin benliklerini sosyal ağlarda sunmalarına olanak tanımaktadır. Benlik sunumu, bireylerin kendilerini diğerlerine karşı istediği şekilde gösterme çabası olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu noktada sosyal ağlar aracılığıyla benlik sunumu başka bir boyuta taşınmış, birçok çalışmaya konu olmuş ve önemli bir mesele haline gelmiştir. Benlik sunumu söz konusu olduğunda Amerikan sosyolojisinin önemli isimlerinden Erving Goffman’ın Günlük Yaşamda Benliğin Sunumu (Presentation of Self in Everyday Life) adlı eserinde ele aldığı unsurlar, bu konuda yapılan çalışmalar için araştırmacılara rehberlik etmektedir. Sosyal ağlarda özellikle fotoğraf paylaşımında gelinen nokta, benlik sunumlarında görsel ögelerin artan önemini gözler önüne sermektedir. Bu çalışmada da Goffman’ın benlik sunumunda belirlediği ilkelere göre bireylerin kendilerini ifade edebilme, diğerlerini etkileme ve yönlendirme çabaları değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmaya konu olan Black Mirror (Kara Ayna) adlı TV serisi, teknolojinin gelecekte insan hayatında nasıl bir role sahip olacağına yönelik tahminlerde bulunurken; yaratacağı olumsuzlukları da ele alan bir distopyadır. Black Mirror dizisinin üçüncü sezon ilk bölümü Nosedive’de kurgulanan distopik toplumda, insanların günlük yaşamının her anında sergiledikleri performansı ve toplumsal statüyü belirleyen şey diğerlerinden aldıkları puanlardır. Bireylerin her davranışı diğerleri tarafından puanlanmaktadır. Bu tür bir toplum, benlik sunumunu her şeyin önüne koyan ve her davranışını ‘beğenilme’ arzusuyla yapan bireyler yaratmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Erving Goffman’ın benlik sunumlarını incelemek amacıyla geliştirdiği dramaturjik yaklaşım, Black Mirror dizisinin Nosedive bölümünün incelenmesinde yol gösterici olmuştur. Nosedive’ın ana karakteri olan Lacie’nin bölüm boyunca kendisini ‘performansına’ nasıl hazırladığı ve ‘rolünü’ iyi oynamak için neler yaptığı yani benliğini nasıl sunacağı noktasındaki çabaları ‘seyircilere’ gösteren kısımlar göstergebilimsel analizden yararlanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Dizide anlatılan distopik toplumun aslında bugün içinde yaşadığımız toplum yapısından çok da farklı olmadığı ve giderek daha da yapmacık bir toplum haline dönüştüğü ifade edilebilir. This study focuses on the historical changes in the concept of privacy—both at the level of the individual and at the level of society. These changes have been evaluated in relation to the question of modernity. With the advent of information socie-ty, modernity developed a dimension of thoughtfulness. These parts also represent the distinct, yet interrelated, concerns of the thesis, namely the phenomenon of privacy; the three different generations experiencing changing natural and short-run historical processes in the historical process of thought-modernity; and facts, concepts, and situations directly and indirectly related to the question of privacy. In addition, it argues that modernity determines the extent to which the question of privacy can be discussed effectively. In its broadest sense, modernity refers to the forms of social, political, and cultural organization that began in Europe during the 17th century and whose effects have settled over time. Notably, modernity has historical charm as it is typically associated with notions such as ‘civility’ and ‘civilization’. Nonetheless, a large number of contemporary sociopolitical problems can be associated with the unfinished and continuing nature of modernity. Therefore, to discuss the transformational nature of the concept of privacy in the context of ongoing modernity—which is often called ‘thoughtful modernity’—it is necessary to develop flexible and dynamic methods of an
