Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities begins: 'It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.' If we take St Paul seriously, the worst of times can be the best of times for Christians. In his biblical account of faith, he sees adversity, trial, rejection and hardship as the nodal points for growth. 'We have no other boast but the Cross.'

The Greek philosopher Epicurus' philosophy that plain dishes offer as much pleasure as tasty dishes when hunger is satiated is analysed. It is suggested that food is at times more than a meal but is a path to painful memories of earlier deprivation, and serves to alleviate the pain in the present.

Discusses the position of Hamas and its relations with the United States and Israel. Unpalatable as talking to terrorists may be, Israel and the United States cannot ignore the fact that Hamas carries a popular mandate and has a tangible political objective that is enshrined in international law: national sovereignty of the Palestinian people. At the end of the day, peace is not going to reign in Palestine or Israel if Hamas is excluded from negotiations. That is an unpalatable feature of international politics: there is no room for moral judgements and ideological positions.
