Natural climate solutions (NCS) are conservation, restoration, and improved land management actions that have potential to provide climate mitigation across different landcover types. NCS related to forests offer a significant portion of cost-effective NCS mitigation required to limit warming to below 2°C. Afforestation – planting trees in areas where forests can occur but does not currently exist has been proposed as a viable NCS. Here, we examine how long-term, medium resolution satellite datasets and physiological growth models can be used to inform potential carbon accumulation from forest afforestation. We leverage free and open Landsat-derived datasets to examine potential increases in aboveground biomass (AGB) and tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) that afforestation may provide by 2050 in the Canadian boreal. We utilized contemporary Landsat-scale definitions of land cover, forest age, and species datasets to identify opportunities for new forest growth in areas previously unforested across study sites. These datasets, along with terrain and climate, were used as inputs for the 3-PG physiological growth model, which converts solar radiation into net primary productivity on a monthly time-step, and was parameterized for key natural species to simulate forest growth and carbon accumulation under three different future climate scenarios. We compared these new fine-scale, climate-adapted estimates with previous findings. The amount of CO2e sequestered per hectare per year increased with increasing CO2 emissions (4.0 – 12.4% more carbon). Using a reference area, the fertilized simulation sequestered 24.38 Tg CO2e year-1 in 2050 compared to 24.9 Tg CO2e year-1 proposed in other research under the warmest scenario. The use of physiological models linked to satellite data to support NCS calculations, particularly for unforested areas, is a new application. The results highlight the potential for 3-PG to be used to estimate AGB and provide valuable information for the performance of NCS under a changing climate.

As projections of exponential urbanization persist, promoting the health of urban populations is one of the most urgent and challenging issues of the 21st century. By taking a planetary health approach and considering the reciprocal relationship between human health and the health of ecosystems, the integration of nature-based solutions into cities can address multiple urban challenges at once. Citizen stewardship of street trees and street tree beds is one such nature-based solution that challenges rapid urbanization while offering a healthier and greener future. Not only does citizen stewardship of street trees play a significant role in tree longevity, but our research suggests that the process of stewardship itself also positively impacts the health and wellbeing of stewards themselves. In this study, we sought to assess the motivations of street tree citizen stewards and the perceived social, environmental, and health effects of stewarding street tree beds in Freiburg, Germany. Based on a questionnaire-based survey and semi-structured interviews with tree stewards, we found that the most common motivations of citizen stewards were modeling positive environmental behavior as well as a desire to help the environment and one’s community. The perceived outcomes included a strong sense of place, a meaningful connection to nature, and the belief that stewarding a street tree bed is good for one’s mental health as well as the environment. Participants also considered street tree beds to be their personal gardens, suggesting that street tree beds may serve as restorative spaces that strengthen public health and social capital while sustaining urban greening. This case study expands the scientific discourse of urban gardening while suggesting that citizen stewardship of street trees and tree beds offers myriad co-benefits for urban ecosystems and public health.

Climate warming has delayed vegetation autumn phenology, which in turn influences terrestrial carbon and water cycles and their feedback to the climate. However, the performance of autumn phenology models, especially for subtropical forests, remains poor. In this study, we extracted the end-of-photosynthetic-growing-season (EOPS) dates in subtropical China over the period 2001-2018 based on high-resolution solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) dataset using three fitting methods. We developed a new autumn phenology model (DMP model) that integrates precipitation and photoperiod into the classic cold-degree days model, and the new model outperformed the classic model reducing the RMSE by approximately 2 days. We found that the EOPS date was delayed by an average of 4.1 days per decade in the subtropical forests of China from 2001 to 2018, and the precipitation (partial correlation coefficient, r = 0.45), rather temperature (r = 0.29) determined the EOPS processes. We further studied future EOPS using the DMP model and found the EOPS will delay by 1.0 days per decade under the SSP2-4.5 scenario and 2.7 days per decade under the SSP5-8.5 scenario from 2030 to 2100. Our study highlighted the role of precipitation in regulating EOPS in the subtropical forests of China and provided valuable insight for integrating multiple climatic determinants into autumn phenology models.

Urban flooding is a major climate change risk that can be mitigated with green infrastructure such as tree plantings and restored naturalised buffers along watercourses. The creation and maintenance of green infrastructure projects for climate change adaptation provides opportunities for community partnerships and programming with co-benefits for human well-being and biodiversity. Here we present findings of action research on a flooding adaptation and education that was implemented on an urban higher education institution’s campus in partnerships within the university and with local Indigenous peoples, the regional conservation authority, the municipal government, and the public library. Through participatory workshops, we applied bioengineering and mixed planting methods to restore a creek bank. Using a combination of oral storytelling, digital media, and visual art that integrated perspectives across disciplines and knowledge systems, we situated our creek restoration project within a framework of environmental justice, emphasising specific acts of stewardship to improve watershed health and advance reconciliation. We produced digital resources and outreach materials to disseminate lessons from the project into the community and to support similar flooding adaptation efforts at local and global scales. Our project demonstrates how incorporating partnerships into the design and implementation of nature-based solutions can build cross-cultural ecological knowledge, forge important on and off-campus relationships, and create place-based opportunities for students to take direct and measurable action on climate change.

Public forest agencies are obligated to take steps to conserve and where possible enhance biodiversity, but they often lack information and tools that support and evidence their decision making. To help inform and monitor impact of management actions and policies aimed at improving forest biodiversity, we have co-developed a quantitative, transparent and repeatable approach for assessing the biodiversity potential of the United Kingdom's (UK) publicly owned forests over space and time. The FOrest Biodiversity Index (FOBI) integrates several forest biodiversity indicators or ‘metrics’, which characterise management-sensitive woodland and landscape features associated with biodiversity. These are measured or modelled annually using spatially comprehensive forest survey data and other well-maintained spatial environmental datasets. Following metric normalisation and a correlation analysis, a statistically robust selection of these metrics is aggregated using a hierarchical procedure to provide composite index scores. The FOBI metric and index results are provided for every individual public forest, and can be summarised across any reporting region of interest. Compared to existing indicators that rely on sample-based forest data, the results thus better support decisions and obligations at a range of scales, from locally targeted action to national, long-term biodiversity monitoring and reporting. We set out how the FOBI approach and associated bespoke online interfaces were co-developed to meet public forest agency needs in two constituent countries of the UK (England and Scotland), whilst providing a conceptual framework that can be adapted and transferred to other geographic areas and private forests. Example results are reported for England’s public forests for four annual timestamps between 2014 and 2021, which indicate improvements to the biodiversity potential of public forests and surrounding landscapes over this time via increases in their diversity, extent, condition and connectivity.

Nature based solutions in cities of the Global South – the ‘where, who and how’ of implementation

Nature-based solutions have gained popularity as an approach to reduce the impacts of climate and environmental change, providing multi-fold and multi-sectoral benefits especially in cities. Yet there has been growing concern about their utility for cities of the Global South, a concern fuelled by the paucity of studies, including scientific peer reviewed and gray literature. In this paper, we contribute to this knowledge gap, based on an analysis of 120 case studies of NBS in Global South cities, documented in two databases (Urban Natural Atlas and Oppla). These cases fall largely under categories of blue and green infrastructure, with a few cases also focusing on grey infrastructure (in buildings or campuses). While most cases are in Asia, several have also been documented in Africa and Central/South America. Two-third of documented NBS cases are aligned towards either national, or lower-level (regional and local) policies indicating the importance of policy mechanisms for driving their implementation. Institutional arrangements are usually non-government, government or collaborative arrangements, with the goal of climate resilience, biodiversity support and ecosystem restoration – along with social goals of creating public spaces. However, when private players take on the mandate for NBS, they focus primarily on grey infrastructure (in buildings and campuses), primarily meant for private or employee benefits, and not for the public. In cases where public engagement is a stated priority, we find tokenistic approaches deployed, primarily seeking engagement through information dissemination and consultation predominate. Despite the stated importance for participation and engagement, only a few cases focused on empowerment and co-creation of NBS with local communities.

Yet there has been growing concern about their utility for cities of the Global South, a concern fuelled by the paucity of studies, including scientific peer reviewed and gray literature. In this paper, we contribute to this knowledge gap, based on an analysis of 120 case studies of NBS in Global South cities, documented in two databases (Urban Natural Atlas and Oppla). These cases fall largely under categories of blue and green infrastructure, with a few cases also focusing on grey infrastructure (in buildings or campuses). While most cases are in Asia, several have also been documented in Africa and Central/South America. Two-third of documented NBS cases are aligned towards either national, or lower-level (regional and local) policies indicating the importance of policy mechanisms for driving their implementation. Institutional arrangements are usually non-government, government or collaborative arrangements, with the goal of climate resilience, biodiversity support and ecosystem restoration – along with social goals of creating public spaces. However, when private players take on the mandate for NBS, they focus primarily on grey infrastructure (in buildings and campuses), primarily meant for private or employee benefits, and not for the public. In cases where public engagement is a stated priority, we find tokenistic approaches deployed, primarily seeking engagement through information dissemination and consultation predominate. Despite the stated importance for participation and engagement, only a few cases focused on empowerment and co-creation of NBS with local communities. We suggest that there is a greater need for documentation regarding the modes of participation especially on roles and levels of actors involved, to enrich our understanding of the impact of NBS on values of justice and equity in the cities of the global South.","PeriodicalId":367648,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Research: Ecology","volume":"20 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141266548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies in boreal regions concerning the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in natural wetlands and experimental reservoirs have shown that these waterbodies contribute to high MeHg levels in underlying sediments, inundated vegetation, and aquatic organisms. Beaver ponds are natural reservoirs that are ubiquitous in the Canadian boreal region and have been reported to increase downstream MeHg concentrations. However, the reported impacts of beaver ponds on stream MeHg vary widely across a limited number of studies, and factors influencing this variation are not well understood. To quantify the effect of beaver ponds on stream mercury concentrations, water samples were taken upstream and downstream of 10 in-channel beaver impoundments in northwestern Ontario, Canada. The downstream:upstream MeHg concentration ratios were related to pond and landscape characteristics to examine potential factors that play a role in determining the effect of beaver ponds on stream MeHg concentrations. Overall, MeHg concentrations were 1.6 times greater downstream of the beaver ponds, though this increase was not consistent; downstream concentrations up to 12 times greater and up to 5 times less were also observed. Landscape characteristics that can be readily obtained from existing spatial datasets or quantified using remote sensing techniques emerged as better predictors of downstream:upstream MeHg concentrations than site-specific stream chemistry parameters or pond characteristics that are more difficult to ascertain, with drier landscapes indicative of lower background MeHg export being more likely to exhibit greater increases in MeHg downstream of a beaver pond. These results suggest that the effects of beaver ponds on surface water MeHg concentrations are generally small but highly variable, and that the magnitude of the pond’s influence on stream MeHg are lessened in landscapes already conducive to higher MeHg concentrations.

The North Pacific Garbage Patch, located in the eastern part of the North Pacific subtropical gyre, contains vast amounts of floating plastic debris. Research over the past decades has mainly focused on assessing the extent of plastic pollution in this oceanic region. However, the North Pacific subtropical gyre is also home to the surface-associated pelagic community known as neuston. To date, the dynamics of this ecosystem and its vulnerability towards environmental pollution and anthropogenic impacts remain poorly understood. While removing plastic debris afloat at sea can reduce negative impacts of plastic pollution on neuston and marine life in general, concerns have been raised that cleanup efforts could have an adverse effect on neuston due to potential co-accumulation of neuston and plastic at the sea surface. Here, we provide the most comprehensive assessment of neuston abundance in the eastern North Pacific Ocean and its relation to the distribution of floating plastic debris (0.05 – 5 cm in size) based on a first year-round survey. Our results reveal that neuston taxa inside the North Pacific Garbage Patch often show similar or lower abundances in areas with particularly high densities of floating plastic debris compared to the wider garbage patch. Targeting open-ocean cleanups on such plastic hotspot territories inside the garbage patch can therefore minimize interactions with neuston during cleanups, thus maximizing their net environmental gain. We further discover that neuston depicts substantial seasonal variability, which needs to be considered when assessing impacts on neuston.

Biodiversity, when viewed through the combined lenses of compositional, structural, and functional attributes, provides for a holistic understanding of the complexities found within community assemblages and ecosystems. However, advancement in our understanding of how ecosystem functional diversity interacts with structural and compositional diversity metrics is lacking, in part because universally applied methodologies to derive ecosystem functional classifications are still under development and vary widely across scales, extents and biomes. This study presents a methodology to construct ecosystem functional types (EFTs), or areas of the land surface that function similarly, using the MODIS NDVI record, for the terrestrial circumpolar Arctic. EFTs were derived from the seasonal dynamics of NDVI, over the Arctic tundra at 250m resolution and compared to bioclimate subzones and to structurally and compositionally defined vegetation units of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM). Correspondence analyses of CAVM EFTs to previously delineated CAVM bioclimatic subzones, physiognomic (vegetation) units and floristic provinces revealed a general congruence, indicating convergence across composition, structure, and function; yet also demonstrated substantial functional variability even within bioclimate subzones and vegetation units. Strong latitudinal gradients in ecosystem function are present, with EFT richness ranging from low (34) in northernmost regions to high (45) in southernmost regions. Locally, the mountainous regions of northern Alaska, and eastern and western Siberia had high spatial variability in ecosystem functioning. Aside from these generalities, we found that EFTs varied widely within individual mapped vegetation units, successfully capturing the functional dimension of biodiversity across the circumpolar Arctic tundra.

Increased environmental threats require proper monitoring of animal communities to understand where and when changes occur. Ecoacoustic tools that quantify natural acoustic environments use a combination of biophony (animal sound) and geophony (wind, rain, and other natural phenomena) to represent the natural soundscape and, in comparison to anthropophony (technological human sound) can highlight valuable landscapes to both human and animal communities. However, recording these sounds requires intensive deployment of recording devices and storage and interpretation of large amounts of data, resulting in large data gaps across the landscape and periods in which recordings are absent. Interpolating ecoacoustic metrics like biophony, geophony, anthropophony, and acoustic indices can bridge these gaps in observations and provide insight across larger spatial extents and during periods of interest. Here, we use seven ecoacoustic metrics and acoustically-derived bird species richness across a heterogeneous landscape composed of densely urbanized, suburban, rural, protected, and recently burned lands in Sonoma County, California, U.S.A., to explore spatiotemporal patterns in ecoacoustic measurements. Predictive models of ecoacoustic metrics driven by land-use / land-cover (LULC) remotely-sensed vegetation structure, anthropogenic impact, climate, geomorphology, and phenology variables capture landscape and daily differences in ecoacoustic patterns with varying performance (avg. R2 = 0.38 ± 0.11) depending on metric and period-of-day and provide interpretable patterns in sound related to human activity, weather phenomena, and animal activity. We also offer a case study on the use of the data-driven prediction of biophony to capture changes in soniferous species activity before (1-2 years prior) and after (1-2 years post) wildfires in our study area and find that biophony may depict the reorganization of acoustic communities following wildfires. This is demonstrated by an upward trend in activity 1-2 years post-wildfire, particularly in more severely burned areas. Overall, we provide evidence of the importance of climate, spaceborne-lidar-derived forest structure, and phenological time series characteristics when modeling ecoacoustic metrics to upscale site observations and map ecoacoustic biodiversity in areas without prior acoustic data collection. Resulting maps can identify areas of attention where changes in animal communities occur at the edge of human and natural disturbances.
