Rhetoric, the Pox, and the Grand Tour

Abstract:In seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, the Grand Tour, sex, and venereal disease became almost indivisible in the public imagination. The Grand Tour was an essential element of a well-born man's education. Yet a persistent belief developed that continental travel was infecting the youth of England with debilitating disease, and that they were bringing disease home to harm the nation. The belief sprang from medical ignorance and xenophobia, but also from the usefulness of associating pox with the Grand Tour, a rhetorical move that helped to palliate domestic medical problems, enrich sectors of the British economy, and lay groundwork for changes in the control of political power—and that has persisted into our own era's conception of the Grand Tour.

Jane Austen and the Tradition of Masculine Benevolence

Abstract:During the long eighteenth century, benevolence was thought to be the greatest of all virtues. In her later novels especially, Jane Austen emphasized its primacy, showing that benevolence must be taught, practiced, and perfected through rigorous self-analysis and the repudiation of self-indulgence. The heroes of those novels tend to exercise benevolence in accordance with the duties of their profession, especially as described in the courtesy books of the period. Nevertheless, even if adept at helping the needy or extending kindness toward their peers, her central male characters do not find happiness until they discipline themselves to be more benevolent toward people of all ranks. Although the novels do not advocate a political solution for ending poverty, Austen suggests that her readers can improve society through benevolent action.

Abstract:This essay clarifies the bibliographical history of the three published accounts of the sufferings of a Dutch sailor abandoned on Ascension Islan in 1726 for sodomy, but is ultimately less concerned with what actually happened than with how the story was represented in each of three versions and with what those changes might tell us about shifts in expectations of fiction readers between 1726 and 1740. It also examines how later critics have responded to the story to demonstrate that ideas about credibility are relative and socially determined. While narrative theory generally argues that "the more information we have on a narrator, the more concrete will be our sense of the quality and distinctness of his or her voice," this case study questions that relationship, at least for the early novel, when narrative techniques and readerly practices were still being developed.
