This paper presents the design procedure of shunt passive filters for improving power quality by eliminating harmonic distortion caused by non-linear loads. The passive filters include single tuned passive filter (STPF) and double tuned passive filter (DTPF) are considered for analysis purpose. In the design of filters, the parameters of passive elements are obtained for 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th harmonic order component. The DTPF is more effective in removal of harmonic distortion while compared with STPF. The simulation of proposed system is done in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The various results are satisfied under IEEE- 519 harmonic standard limits.

Modern power systems are subjected to widespread line failures due to excess load demands, leading to voltage instability and voltage collapse. The objective of this paper is to study the application of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) devices in improving voltage profile and controlling the power flowing through the transmission lines during excess load increments. Voltage Stability Analysis of the network is carried out by computing the eigen values of the power system reduced Jacobian matrix for each case of load increments before and after placing the UPFC device in the system. The line outage for which we get maximum number of critical eigen values is termed as the critical line outage. Voltage Stability Index is computed for each line corresponding to this critical outage. The line which has got the highest VSI for the critical outage is called as the critical line which indicates the optimal location of UPFC device. After placing the UPFC device on the critical line, the voltage magnitudes of the severely affected buses for this critical load increments is compared with those magnitudes during the critical outage.. The proposed approach is demonstrated on the IEEE 14 bus system in Matlab PSAT( Power system analysis Toolbox) software. The results obtained shows that UPFC devices improves the voltage profile of the buses and controls both active and reactive power flows across the transmission lines thus, preventing their outages during excess load demands and making the power system network voltage stable.
该方法在IEEE 14总线系统上用Matlab PSAT(Power system analysis Toolbox)软件进行了验证。结果表明,UPFC设备改善了母线的电压分布,控制了输电线路上的有功和无功功率流,从而防止了在过载需求时母线的中断,使电网电压稳定。

A highly efficient, low cost photovoltaic water pumping system integrating a push-pull converter and a three-phase voltage source inverter using a single photovoltaic panel is proposed which has got high life time due to the absence of batteries. The converter steps up the panel voltage and the inverter powers the AC motors for varying speed conditions and it uses a sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) strategy with 1/6 optimal third harmonic injection. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) strategy forces the PV to extract the maximum power at the given irradiance level. The voltage reference obtained from this is used in a PI controller to adjust the motor speed. Thus the proposed pumping system works on varying power input and gives varying water output at a given pump head and can be used in isolated locations to deliver water.

Over the past decades, designers and operators of fluidized beds have been concentrating on developing the CFBC technology, establishing the optimum operating conditions and troubleshooting associated with refractory, etc. A sorbent, typically limestone or dolomite is used in the fluidized-bed combustion boiler to capture sulfur di-oxides (SO2) in-situ. Due attention has not been paid to understand the limestone characteristics that are not only important for efficient capture of SO2 but also greatly influence the deposition. 125 MWe Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) boiler experienced severe fouling in back pass of the boiler leading to obstruction of gas flow passage, while using high sulfur lignite with sorbent, calcium carbonate, to capture sulfur dioxide. Optical microscopy of the hard deposits showed mainly anhydrite (CaSO4) and absence of intermediate phases such as calcium oxide or presence of sulfate rims on de-carbonated limestone. It is hypothesized, that loose unreacted calcium oxide that settle on tubes are subjected to re-carbonation and further extended sulfation resulting in hard deposits. Foul probe tests were conducted in selected locations of back pass for five different composition of lignite, with varied high sulfur and ash contents supplied from the mines along with necessary rates of sorbent limestone to control SO2 and the deposits build up rate was determined. The deposit build- up was found increasing, with increase in ash content of lignite, sorbent addition and, percentage of fines in limestone. This paper covers the field modifications and remedial measures carried out to dislodge deposits on heat transfer surfaces, to handle the deposits in ash conveying system, and to control sorbent fines from the milling circuit thereby overcoming the deposit formation and clogging.

This paper presents modelling and closed loop control of bidirectional buck boost cascade inverter, which produces an ac output voltage larger than the dc input voltage. The bidirectional inverter is seen as the cascade of a buck stage and a boost stage. The function of buck stage is to maintain main inductor current as a constant value and boost stage is a Current Source Inverter (CSI), which regulates the output voltage. A decoupled analog control scheme is used for inductor current control and output voltage control.

Sepic power factor correction converters are used now days to reduce the second stage in a two-stage PFC preregulator. Moreover the problem of inverted output voltage can also avoided. But the PFC converters, due to nonlinear effects will create line frequency instabilities and subharmonic oscillations in the line current. This can adversely affect the system and shorten its lifetime. So to avoid these problems a novel control technique has been proposed. A second order Notch filter can be incorporated into the outer voltage compensation loop. The suitable notch gain and quality factor helps to suppress the instabilities and THD in line current and thus enhance the stability of the system. The system has been designed in MATLAB/Simulink software and the performance of control scheme has been verified.

The quality of power is degrading day by day due to heavy use of non-linear loads. Power factor is a measure of effectiveness of electricity usage. AC-DC converters are modified to operate as power factor correction circuit In this paper, a novel control algorithm is developed to provide power factor correction(PFC) of air condition loads so as to optimize its operation. Novel algorithm also aims at controlling the output voltage and speed of compressor motor. Proposed design provides a simple, compact and low cost converter with low voltage stresses. This paper presents the evaluation of a constant frequency active clamped flyback converter for PFC. The work is simulated and analyzed in MATLAB.
