Research on occupational and occupationally-related morbidity is essential for setting up a system of measures designed to promote health and well-being in industrial workers. The right conclusions can only be drawn and the adequate decisions made after data on occupational and occupationally-related diseases have been accurately stored, processed, interpreted and evaluated. Starting from the vast amount of information collected in some branches of national economy and yielded by routine statistic procedures, the author attempts to assess systems of storage and retrieval currently used for decision-oriented data. It is suggested that essential changes could be effected in today's system for analysing data on occupational and occupationally-related diseases on the basis of decentralized evidence.

A 3-year study of the efficacy of the complex prophylaxis system of stomatological diseases in children showed that the severity of dental caries, according to the CFE index, diminished by 65.6 per cent in the children included in the clinical trial and by 23.5 per cent in the children undergoing mass examination. In order to increase the efficacy of prophylactic measures, the stomatological component will be included in the integrated prophylaxis programme of non-infectious chronic diseases, which will be carried out in the Latvian SSR under the auspices of the WHO.

The current active propaganda of health- and hygiene-related knowledge demands the elaboration and introduction of new scientific trends and formal efforts to stimulate people to adopt and sustain a healthy life-and-work style. A number of local industrial enterprises have initiated health education programmes based on specific structural-functional units: lectures, practical training in "Health and Leisure" rooms, "Phone-in Counselling" services. The results of these and other such activities have amply demonstrated the medical and social importance of promoting healthy lifestyle beliefs and behaviour in working communities.

Presentation of the unpublished documents, deposited with the State Archives Dept. in bucharest, referring to the foundation of "V. Babeş" Institute enriches the specialty literature, vouching the medical-historic significance of the very moment it was founded. It is through the foundation of the Institute of Pathology and Bacteriology in 1887 under the leadership of prof. dr. V. Babeş, that new perspectives are opening towards a bright tradition of he Romanian medicine regarding public health development in Romania. Major tool in researching and solving of some main preventive medical public health questions, the "V. Babeş" Institute represented both a true center for training some outstanding personalities of the Romanian medicine within the field of the pathologic and microbiologic anatomy, and a model of organizing and developing some new research institutes, in the medical and pharmaceutical field.

The authors started from the assumption that "expectations" relating to hygienic work habits of workers in the food catering industry were a function of their health education. Research was conducted in three major food catering units both before and after completion of health education courses. In order to assess workers' awareness, they were asked to fill in a questionnaire pertaining to their sanitary information and their approaches to washing up, cleaning and disinfection. Samples taken from tableware, tools and workers' hands were tested microbiologically. Indices computed to measure the efficiency of the health education courses and the standards of microbial safety, as well as the chi 2 test confirmed the non-stochastic character of the positive findings in experimental units vs. controls.

By means of the inquiry method, informations were obtained regarding the appraisement of temporary working incapacity, performed by 76 doctors, of whom 45 general practitioners and 31 factory doctors. In addition to the data related to the inquiry, the questionnaire contained also the description of five clinical cases. The conclusions of the appraisement and the causes for refusal to deliver a medical certificate are discussed.
