Intestinal stomas are created in infants for a variety of conditions. A neonatal defect or illness has an intense emotional impact on the parents. The ET nurse is challenged to develop a teaching plan that integrates routine physical care of the infant with supportive emotional care for the parents to promote normal parent-infant attachment, effective coping, and normal growth and development of the infant with special needs. Bandura's Social Learning Theory provides the theoretic rationale for the plan of care developed in this article.

A comparison of the seven most commonly used pressure-reducing products across sacral, trochanter, and heel interface sites was conducted with 15 healthy volunteers. Effects of weight on product were also tested. Products were rank ordered by cost into low-, moderate-, and high-cost groups. A double repeated measures design was used to examine effects of products at interface sites. Mean pressures for all products at the sacral site were acceptably below the guideline. Four of the products had acceptable mean pressure readings at the trochanter site. No product had acceptable readings at the heel site. Significant main effects for product and site were found. A significant interaction between product and site was also found. Weight had no effect, either directly or in interaction with site or product. Moderate-cost products were found to be preferable at sacral and trochanter sites. At the heel site, cost groups did not differ.

Critiquing research papers helps a nurse remain current in the scientific literature. The critic examines the paper for components of the research process, i.e., literature review, methodology, results, and discussions. Nurses can enhance their reading of research by reading more research papers, participating in group critique sessions, participating in the research process, and contacting the researcher with questions as necessary.

Pressure ulcers are an important health concern. A wide range of options are available for their prevention and treatment. Support surfaces are building blocks in the endeavor to reduce or relieve interface pressures. This article examines and classifies support surfaces, provides critical assessment criteria for patient selection, and discusses areas to be evaluated in the selection of support surfaces.

Nurses and patients engage in an interactive process that is both supportive and educational. The ability of the nurse to communicate with the patient in a manner that the patient perceives as accepting will lead to transaction, goal attainment, effective nursing care, and satisfaction. This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between nurses' perceptions of patients with ostomies and those patients' satisfaction with nursing care. Data were also collected on nurses' confidence in caring for patients with ostomies, the length of time with the patient, and previous experience in caring for patients with new ostomies. Twelve patients with new ostomies and the registered nurses who cared for them on postoperative units at a regional medical center and a community hospital were identified. Reed's 1989 adaptation of Yuker, Block, and Young's 1972 Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons scale was used to obtain the nurse's perceptions of patients with ostomies. The LaMonica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale was used to obtain the ostomy patients' satisfaction with nursing care. No statistically significant relationship was identified between nurses perceptions of patients with ostomies and these patients' satisfaction with care. However, the data suggest that there may be a relationship between higher patient satisfaction scores and three factors: the nurse's confidence in caring for patients with ostomies, the length of the nurse-patient relationship, and the employment of a certified ET nurse in the hospital in which the patient receives nursing care.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Prevention of pressure ulcers is the preferred management strategy. Manufacturers have responded with a proliferation of products designed to prevent or minimize skin breakdown. To select the proper pressure-reduction product for an individual patient or a given patient population, the ET nurse should be familiar with the indications for and the advantages and disadvantages of various support surfaces.
