A vast universe and the recent discovery of over a thousand planets in our galaxy point to the probability of intelligent extraterrestrials. A theologian would not decide whether there are other intelligent, material beings in the universe. Does the Christian faith insist that only one salvation-history exists, that on Earth, the one recorded in the Bible centered on Jesus of Nazareth? A Christian approach to this likelihood begins with basic religious themes: the knowing person, that person’s relationship to God, sin and evil, incarnation. In past centuries a few theologians have pondered this topic like Origen in the third century, a Franciscan university professor in the fifteenth century, and in the late twentieth century Karl Rahner. If the size of the universe stimulates these reflections, religious faith encourages them.

Climate change is the most significant moral, ethical and spiritual issue of our time. All other social and justice issues are increasingly linked back to climate change. Leaders of the major world religions have written documents and called for people of faith to become engaged. Yet, faith communities do not become engaged in this social and spiritual concern. Secular society is looking for moral guidance and faith communities have significant wisdom and practices to offer. Linking science with theological reflections, justice imperatives and praxis may assist ministers in grappling with the critical concern of climate change that looms ever larger as we move deeper into the twenty-first century. The shift in worldview and theology that is required could not only renew the earth and care for brothers and sisters but could be an opportunity for renewing religious traditions and deepening a sense of identity, collaboration and community worldwide.

In light of new data presented in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which emphasizes the increasingly important and urgent need for a global response to the ecological and climate crisis, what role can Christian ethics, religious leaders, and people of faith play in responding to the climate challenge? While understanding scientific data on climate change is incredibly important for interpreting the “signs of the times,” most people approach everyday life in terms of the deeply held values and beliefs—the stories that orient and guide human decision-making. This article notes both the value and limits of scientific literacy, while highlighting the importance of narratives, worldviews, and religion in motivating communities to take action on climate change.

Jesuit Father Allan Figueroa Deck, S.J., is Professor and Charles S. Casassa, S.J., Chair of Catholic Social Values at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Few topics could be more pertinent to the exciting and challenging moment we are living today as the People of God than that of preaching in the context of our nation’s and the world’s ever-growing diversity. This is so first of all because our US parishes, schools, and Catholic organizations increasingly reflect the same multi and intercultural reality of the global Church with its experience of migration, enhanced communications, and interdependent, global economies. As a result, priestly, diaconal, and all ministerial formation demands cultural competencies as never before. Second, the Church’s insistent focus on the New Evangelization urgently requires an appreciation of diversity and of the essential role it plays in the Church’s very mission. Preachers and teachers are called to seize the moment and reach out to diverse peoples, cultures, and social classes—what our amazing new Bishop of Rome Francis refers to as the outskirts, the “existential, geographic and economic peripheries of humanity.”1 This is truly a moment of kairos that means stressing the missiological dimension of both the ministerial and baptismal priesthood as well as the evangelizing mission of all preaching and teaching in the Church. Intercultural competence, in turn, becomes the essential and inescapable tool for executing the outreach and mission.
