pounded by the compositional style, as Ogren frequently introduces new people and books without context and only later provides background. Scholars writing about Keith or the other figures represented will want to carefully study the relevant chapters and especially the documents in the appendix. Specialists in Christian Kabbalah will be interested in the whole book. Despite its limitations, Kabbalah and the Founding of America makes a meaningful contribution to our understanding of early American Protestant thinkers, reminding us that the Puritans were not radically independent thinkers forging a new path in the New World, but rather participants in the international intellectual milieux of which Christian Kabbalah was a part.

Recent Scholarship in Quaker Studies Jordan Landes DIGITAL PROJECTS USING QUAKER RESOURCES: The Ballitore Project is digitizing and transcribing a collection of 2,500 documents related to the Irish Quaker community of Ballitore, Ireland, including letters, journals, notebooks, and dream accounts. The project seeks to reveal “the overlapping intellectual and structural factors—from the seventeenth century to today—that create archival gaps and silences along lines of race, gender, class, and nationality.” The Ballitore Collection is held by the University of California, Santa Barbara Library’s Special Research Collections. UCSB is partnered with California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and Howard University and received funding from the UC-HBCU Initiative, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies. The Ballitore Project successfully hosted student interns from the partner institutions and will host one last group of interns in the summer of 2023. Interns use Zooniverse, a research platform, to contribute plaintext transcriptions and information about the letters’ senders and recipients to the project’s transcription site, Corresponding with Quakers. These transcriptions then enable the project team to use “computational techniques to expose the collection’s contents and exclusions, highlighting how women and people of color are often marginalized within a community that claims egalitarianism.” The project’s progress can be followed through its websites and on Twitter. https://ballitore.english.ucsb.edu/ https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/rachaelsking/corresponding-with-quakers On Twitter: @BallitoreProj Jordan Landes Curator, Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College BIBLIOGRAPHY Abolition, Manumission, Enslavement Bennett, Bridget. “England/New England: A British Quaker and a Fugitive from Slavery Encounter Each Other on a Train, 1850.” In Crossings in Nineteenth-Century American Culture, edited by Edward Sugden, 158–74.
