In this paper, the effects of tuning the kernel bandwidth for an online LSSVM are investigated. LSSVM is used to obtain a model of the system, and based on this model information, an adaptive PID is designed to control the plant. The kernel parameter determines how the measured input is mapped to the feature space and a better plant model can be achieved by discarding redundant or irrelevant features, therefore introducing adaptability in kernel parameters improves modeling performance. The purpose of this paper is to find the optimal kernel bandwidth to improve the modeling performance of the LSSVM and consequently control performance obtained by adaptive PID which is designed based on the Jacobian information attained by the LSSVM. The proposed method has been evaluated by simulations carried out on a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR), and the results show that there is an improvement both in modeling and control performances.

In this paper, performance of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) and the Bees algorithms (BA) is compared for proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller tuning. Both results obtained show good stability, set-point tracking performance and robustness. However, performance of the ABC is better than BA for PID controller tuning.

The vision of pervasive environments is being realized more than ever with the proliferation of services and computing resources located in our surrounding environments. Identifying those services that deserve the attention of the user is becoming an increasingly-challenging task. In this paper, we present an adaptive multi-criteria decision making mechanism for recommending relevant services to the mobile user. In this context, “Relevance” is determined based on a user-centric approach that combines both the reputation of the service, the user's current context, the user's profile, as well as a record of the history of recommendations. Our decision making mechanism is adaptive in the sense that it is able to cope with users' contexts that are changing and drifts in the users' interests, while it simultaneously can track the reputations of services, and suppress repetitive notifications based on the history of the recommendations. The paper also includes some brief but comprehensive results concerning the task of tracking service reputations by analyzing and comprehending Word-of-Mouth communications, as well as by suppressing repetitive notifications. We believe that our architecture presents a significant contribution towards realizing intelligent and personalized service provisioning in pervasive environments.

In the present paper we focus on online monitoring system for predictive maintenance based on sensor automated inputs. Our subject was a device from Maritsa East 2 power plant — a mill fan. The main sensor information we have access to is based on the vibration of the nearest to the mill rotor bearing block. Our aim was to create a (nonlinear) model able to predict on time possible changes in vibrations tendencies that can be early signal for system work deterioration. For that purpose recently developed kind of Recurrent Neural Networks named Echo state networks were applied. The preliminary investigations showed their good approximation ability for our purpose. Direction of future work will be increasing of predications time horizon.

In this study we have explained the implementation details of a Automatic Question Answering System for Turkish. Automatic Question Answering (QA) is a sub-field of information retrieval (IR) that deals with finding the answers of submitted free text questions. Automatic QA is important for daily life because, it retrieves the answers or answer sets of submitted questions without wasting time for searching the entire document corpus that include the answers. The important issue in QA systems is to extract the features of each sentence to create their semantic meaning. In this study, documents are processed with pattern matching techniques and features of documents are extracted for question answering system. We propose to categorize the questions automatically and then select the correct answer from corresponding answer set. We have used name entity recognition and pattern matching to categorize the type of questions. Additionally we have used range queries to submit the questions. Instead of using traditional distance metrics we have proposed a new approach to rank the similar documents. Each approach has been evaluated and described in this study.

In this paper an evolutionary multi-objective optimization approach is applied to extend fuzzy multi objective problem considered by Jeng-Jong Lin [1] and Gupta et al [2, 3]. In our extended work, the concept of fuzzy [6, 8] due time is applied to increase satisfaction grade of customers and to meet their demands much better as well as to decrease the delay times of vehicles, which service customers during their desired period of times, so the objectives are as follows: maximize the loading capacity of vehicles, minimize the distance travelled by vehicles, minimize the waiting time of customers, maximize the satisfaction grade of customers, minimize the delay times of vehicles.

The aim of this study was to develop an optimum precipitation prediction method, based on artificial neural network (ANN). The methodology was applied to precipitation predicting in Eğirdir in the Lake's Districts of Turkey. In application, Eğirdir precipitations were predicted from Isparta and Senirkent precipitations. Each precipitation stations is located in same region. For monthly precipitaion predictions, data were taken from Turkish State Meteorological Service. Used data covered 36 years period during 1975–2010 for monthly precipitations. The ANN models had only one output but different numbers of input variables were examined. The comparison of historical records and ANN models showed a better agreement between the ANN models estimations and measurements of monthly precipitations. With the help of ANN model for integrated precipitaton prediction, it was is possible to estimate missing or unmeasured data and it was good at prediction on both low and high precipitations.

In this study, applications in the field of monitoring of Electrocardiography (ECG) by using wearable system technologies are summarized and discussed. It is also explored a new solution for real time ECG monitoring with low power DSP and different type of real time signal processing methods. With this system, a lot of data can be collected and compared to determine the coming problem for the heart diseases in the future. In addition, a sample wearable system application is realized for processing and monitoring of ECG signal in real time. The system is mainly composed of three parts. First one is patient vest that carries the ECG electrodes and the main board. Second one is designed for main board hardware that senses heart signal from the body, and then to amplify and convert it from analog phase to digital. The final part is developed software that monitor and record obtained signal cooperation with computer by using DSP software which will processing and transmit the signal. In this study, some of the signal processing techniques such as band passing FIR, IIR notch and adaptive filter were used. Code Composer Studio V4 (CCStudio V4) software environment is used to embed the developed software into the DSP. In order to trace the signal with computer and to save the obtained data with .dat extension, QT program is used which is mostly used for mobile applications. As a result, perception of signal by patient's vest, conversion to digital phase and processing by high level signal processing methods are satisfied. In addition to this, real-time processing is succeeded with high speed without any delays.

Despite considerable advances in sensing instrumentation and IT infrastructure, monitoring and diagnostics technology has not yet found its place in health management of mainstream machinery and equipment. The fundamental reason for this being the mismatch between the growing diversity and complexity of machinery and equipment employed in industry and the historical reliance on “point-solution” diagnostic systems that necessitate extensive characterization of the failure modes and mechanisms. While these point solutions have a role to play, in particular for monitoring highly-critical assets, generic yet adaptive solutions, could facilitate large-scale deployment of diagnostic and prognostic technology. We present the role of hidden-Markov models for autonomous diagnostics. The proposed methods have been tested on a CNC machining test-bed outfitted with thrust-force and torque sensors for monitoring drill-bits.
