"A vigilant hand": Reading The Age of Innocence from Below “一只警惕的手”:从下面解读纯真时代

Abstract:This article, keyed to The Age of Innocence, takes as its point of departure the resistance from students that many teachers encounter when they assign the novels that Edith Wharton centered in wealthy, privileged New York society. There is indeed, in each of these novels, a central story that dominates and occupies nearly all the surface, dealing with the personal and familial problems of rich people. But there is a second story, about servants and workers and providers of the comforts that the wealthy deem essential. It is important to respond to and understand the first story through a keen awareness of the second, which can be done by reading The Age of Innocence "from below." When teaching this novel and others like it in subject and setting, it is thus helpful and illuminating to bring the second story forward. Reading from below enables readers to appreciate Wharton's style and vision more deeply and makes her work more accessible to and rewarding for students.

Abstract:Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence: New Centenary Essays (Bloomsbury, 2019) is the most recent volume focused on Wharton's Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. Edited by Arielle Zibrak, it brings new critical approaches to Wharton's work and draws connections between the novel's gaze back at the late nineteenth century and our own. Wharton scholars were invited to respond to each of the collection's essays and the authors of the essays, in turn, wrote back to their respondents. The following conversation expands the insights of the original volume and points toward new directions in Wharton scholarship.

Edith Wharton's Proximate Intimacies: Object Mediations in an "Age" of Social Distance

Abstract:As nineteenth-century etiquette books remind their readers, the basic principles of social life meant maintaining a clear and insulating space around corporal forms. Amid such normative expectations, Wharton's characters move through material worlds richly populated with objects, many of which are alluringly textured. This essay argues that a number of these objects were charged with additional associative meanings, based on the persons with whom they are most closely aligned, often their owners. Such material items become what I describe as the "proximate objects" that fascinate Wharton's characters, not only because of their sensual appeal, but also because of their combined physical availability and association with other human forms. For characters in fictions such as The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, and The Reef, proximate objects have the capacity to mediate human desires by providing a sense of an appropriately distanced but nevertheless material intimacy with another person as they stand in for human forms that must remain socially distanced from one another. Revealing the dynamic and sensual dimensions of the material world, the haptic encounters experienced by Wharton's characters offer insight into the materiality interwoven with human desire.

Abstract:This essay explores the inscription of codes and intersemiotics in Wharton's The Age of Innocence and its 1993 adaptation by Martin Scorsese, and analyzes the effects derived from them. It begins by showing how the sense of ironical distance that prevails in the first chapters of the novel is redefined in the film, especially in the brilliant title sequence and opening scene that set a different tone, more likely to trigger identification with the characters and produce emotion, instead of underscoring convention. Apart from the opera motif, other intersemiotic connections that function differently in the book and its adaptation deserve to be examined. Thus the essay studies how pictorial quotations abound in the film, more than in Wharton's novel, especially works by James Tissot that convey a sense of ambiguity, while other paintings are related to the transcoding of violence and mystery. It then discusses the subversive emphasis on frames and framing and the reference to tableau vivant, before dwelling on facets of textual and filmic reflexivity.

Afterword: "Talking Against Time" in The Age of Innocence

Abstract:In The Writing of Fiction, Edith Wharton argues that "the attempt to produce on the reader the effect of the passage of time" is one of the "central difficulties" confronting any novelist. In none of her own works of fiction is that difficulty resolved more successfully than in The Age of Innocence. This study demonstrates the extent to which an awareness of time occupies the core of Wharton's novel: time as it elapses, and time as it shapes the experiences of her characters. In old New York of the 1870s, people are strictly constrained by myriad inviolable routines and rituals, forced to be perpetually mindful of clock and calendar. The suspicion that their world is in the process of being gradually but irreversibly altered is pivotally captured when several characters, envisioning future inventions like the telephone, are said to be "talking against time"—a then-familiar but seldom elucidated colloquialism. Her own response to the acceleration of the social and technological changes that overtook old New York illustrates how Wharton, too, may be said to be "talking against time" in her later critical and autobiographical prose.
