In the French Revolution, the extension of the ideal of a political community of free and equal citizens goes hand in hand with a new conception of work. Work becomes the main means of social integration, whether through individual effort leading to property or through assistance to the poor. This transition from a feudal society to one based on freedom of occupation and social protection lays the foundation for the emergence of the notion of the right to work. In 1848, this right is considered a prerequisite for the enjoyment of all other rights and many agree that the nascent Republic should take charge of social issues. But, in the course of the Revolution, the right to work acquires a more radical meaning: it serves to express the idea that the social sphere should be governed by the same egalitarian principles as the political sphere.

The volume aims to fit into the existing studies in Italy and Portugal on the Portuguese 18th century, however describing the 18th century from a new, inclusive (and no more separatist), point of view between Portugal, Macao (in the south of China) and Brazil. The related insight does not have the claim to completeness, but offers an overview, allowing the lector to range over three Lusitanian territories. According to this principle of completeness, the volume is divided in three chapters within which historical, iconographical and literary themes of the 18th century are illustrated. The volume higlights historical facts, literary works, also through an European view of the same period, that have marked the Portuguese, Asian and Brazilian 18th century.

The starting point is the conviction that publicity is central to Kantian political thought as part of the wider relationship between politics and morality. In this sense the book aims to outline subjective and objective limits of the public control of power, which must be structurally guaranteed from a juridical point of view and that citizens/subjects have to put into practice. But from a Kantian point of view publicity is also linked to education and to the public use of reason, that individuals must have the courage to realize. The individual dimension and the collective/institutional one are tightly linked to answer the question: according to Kant, is it possible an education to publicity?

The book collects the contributions of a group of scholars, with different scientific backgrounds, on the issue of the relationship between taxation, solidarity and citizenship within the EU. The common thread linking them is the inescapability of the tax duty in a community of rights and the incompleteness of the European system, which performs important functions of collective interest without claiming any cost for those who use it. What emerges is the need for a genuine EU own tax, which, without the intermediary of the Member States, would burden the users of European public goods, increasing awareness of the social value of the EU, amplifying its solidarity dimension, and outlining a new concept of citizenship. In short, I pay, therefore I am (European citizen).

In these harsh lands inhabited by the silence of humble fragments, architectural design ties both history and life together, revealing the essential features of the place. The book proposes a journey within abandonment between Architecture and ruins: it reinterprets the pioneering research of Aldo Rossi; it explores, together with Gianandrea Gazzola, the labyrinths of meaning between Art and ruin; it investigates the projects of Colletta di Castelbianco by Giancarlo De Carlo and the houses in the Canton of Ticino by Buchner Bründler; and finally, it traces an itinerary of contamination between anonymous architecture and architectural languages in the Mediterranean. It is within these horizons that the Design and Research Laboratory of the Florence School of Architecture reveals the deep soul and redesigns a new life for the abandoned villages of Castiglioncello di Firenzuola (FI) and Campo di Brenzone (VR).

Paul M. Sweezy (New York, 1910-2004) was a co-founder and, for over half a century, co-editor of Monthly Review. At the basis of his theoretical thought there is a Marxian approach, open and creative, and an attention to high elaboration of the twentieth century – Hilferding and Veblen, Schumpeter and Keynes, Kalecki and Steindl. With The Theory of Capitalist Development (1942) and Monopoly Capital (1966, written with Baran), he was a reference point on a global level. Monopoly capitalism is marked by an organic tendency to stagnation. Antagonistic factors can, in some way, counteract it: waste, with induced consumption and armaments, epoch-making innovations and wars. In the Sweezian reflection of the last quarter of the twentieth century – also in dialogue with Minsky – the systemic trend is particularly counteracted by the large indebtedness and finance explosion. However, finance becoming autonomous and placing itself at the center of the system increases its instability and unsustainability and exposure to the crisis.

In the current media landscape, digital devices seem to undermine traditional learning and reading practices. Overwhelmed by cognitive overload and a flood of information stimuli, constantly busy scrolling through touch screens, today's readers often show a "distracted", hasty and “impatient” approach; they skim-read through text without in-depth comprehension, thus risking to miss out on the full understanding of meanings. Following the increased diffusion of digital reading, both inside and outside of schools, researchers are called upon to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, prerogatives and risks. Do the new reading modalities restructure our cognitive habits and our thinking? Is it better to read on paper or through digital texts? Does online reading require new competencies and skills? How can we teach students to read “critically” on the screen? These are just some of the questions which this volume will try to answer, benefiting from the contribution of various branches of knowledge ranging from pedagogy to media studies, from cognitive psychology to neuroscience; standing in between the two opposing views of the "myth of superficiality" and the "myth of depth", and avoiding both uncritical optimism regarding the present and nostalgic idealization of a past forever lost.

The book meticulously analyses the history of the critical reception of avantguard art through the interpretations received by one of its greatest emblems, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso, 1907. Since Les Demoiselles has been considered over this century the true paradigm of Modern Art, this book is, fundamentally, a sort of synthesis of the discourses about Modernism from formalism, iconology, Leo Steinberg's 'Other Criteria’, sociological, the biographical and psychoanalytical theses, cultural and historicist and lastly, the impact of post-structuralism and the feminist, post-colonialist and transnational interpretations. The final chapter deals with the artistic versions of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon made by artists. It is an essay on the different versions and identities of Modern Art and Modernism that have been produced throughout the last century.
