This miscellaneous volume aims to commemorate the Iberian and European celebrations about Magellan that started in 2019. Specifically, the volume commemorates: the person and the image of Magellan on earth (celebrating the 500 years of his circumnavigation of the Earth) and in the universe (remembering the two Magellanic clouds); the Eddington’s journey and the Apollo XI flight to the moon, through many essays that investigate the concept of travel in its several attitudes (explorative, scientific, philosophical, introspective, literary) in Sciences and Humanities, from ancient to contemporary ages, in an intercultural perspective, following a thematic scheme and a cronological one as well, if it is possible.

Globalization is a huge topic and here we have chosen to describe only a few pieces of a complex mosaic. Its description has a historical perspective and ranges from economic to medical, from social to demographic issues. It aims to reconstruct a background picture that places demographics in the scenario of international relations. It is possible to distinguish some themes: 1. The population is aging and enriching itself. Convergence often collides with delayed demographic transition. 2. The economic weight and political power are shifting towards Asia. 3. The technological revolution affects almost all aspects of society. 4. The increase in energy consumption and new production models make it difficult to manage the scarcity of resources. 5. Interdependence between countries does not go hand in hand with strengthening global governance.

Beginning with a tribute to the late Chris 'Zithulele' Mann, a poet and activist who was deeply immersed in Dante, this chapter comments on some of the patterns that emerge from the creative contributions of the Dantessa students. Two authors affirm and explore ideas of black womanhood by appealing to Beatrice and Francesca, potentially combining the two figures. Several authors are acutely aware of the purgatorial condition of post-apartheid South Africa, suggesting a long and arduous march to freedom. The image of flight recurs: thrice, madly, into the inferno and once, temporarily, in limbo. These lively responses to La Commedia prompt the question: what kind of literary studies is proper to purgatory, and elicit a tentative reply, urging a re-invention of the discipline of letters.

The novel by Al-Ṭayib Ṣāliḥ The Season of Migration to the North is a classic of the post-modern Arabic literature. The critical literature of the last century has privileged the post-colonial interpretation. One of the aims of this essay is to reveal the inner reality of the main characters, who are not seen from an external point of view, but within a closer relationship with the reader.

The paper focuses on the relationship between the Fascist regime and the administrative justice. Once identified in the “invention” of exclusive jurisdiction (over individual matters) a “revolutionary” act of the early Fascism, the paper faces the problem of the administrative litigation over public debt. The issue is treated starting from the transformation of the jurisdiction of merit in the matter of public debt into exclusive jurisdiction: a special attention is paid to the two opposite theses of the “left-wing fascism” and the Italian Constitutional Court. Subsequently, the reflection shifts to the Fascist laws that have limited or excluded since 1923 the appeal against certain administrative acts, also referring to the reactions of the doctrine of the time. A particular case concerns the vice of excess of power which, in the Fascist period, was rationalized and also took on a different meaning from the original one foreseen by the law of 1889. After the fall of Fascism, a final look is turned to the two elusive techniques of the appeal to the administrative judge represented by the laws-measure and the so called “theft of jurisdiction”

After explaining a large set of new concepts and proposing a new theoretical frame, we first depict same stereotypical behavioral and strategic propensities emerging in human systems according an important managerial literature. Then we highlight the systemic models emerging from the strategies implemented by some Italian Regions in managing innovation dynamics. The arrival of the analysis is the identification of more effective tools for founding innovation policies.

In summer 1923, in the midst of the ‘fight’ to balance the budget, Minister Alberto De Stefani announced the abolition of inheritance tax, pursuant to the ‘full powers’ granted to the government by the Parliament. This abolition – possibly the most iconic act of the ‘financial restauration’ carried on by De Stefani – provoked surprise and interest in the country and abroad but was substantially overlooked by historians. This chapter – first outcome of a research in progress – offers a first historical reconstruction of this episode of early 1920s Italian economic history, by documenting both the positions of an influent advisor of De Stefani, the economist Maffeo Pantaleoni, and even more, the lobbying activity carried on by pressure groups such as the bankers’ association, an influential businessman linked to Mussolini such as Cesare Goldmann, and a young, very proactive association of notaries. Moreover, the chapter surveys the way in which both Italian and international media reported on this case of politics of inequality, offering a different perspective on a crucial period in the consolidation of Fascist power.

The human drive for knowledge, together with the technology development, often accelerated by warfare, has opened new frontiers to exploration. Once the exploration of the Earth globe came to an end with the conquest of the geographical poles, of the high mountains, and the ocean deeps, mankind developed new attention to Space and the exploration of the Universe, not only by means of ground based telescopes, but with rockets, unmanned and manned satellites and spacecrafts. In the mid of XX century, the drivers are similar to those that pushed the Nations of XV century to discover the world: geopolitics strategies, hunger for resources and knowledge, conquer and adventure. We are just at the beginning. This is a brief overview of the Space Age history and of the present and future development.
