Group Formation, Participant Retention, and Group Disbandment in a Men's Mutual Help Organization

Representatives of an international men’s peer-led mutual help organization were surveyed to determine rates of group formation and disbandment, rates of individual participation and retention, and factors associated with long lasting and effective groups. From 1990 to 1998, the organization’s center gained a net of about 3 groups and 22 members per year. Median survival time of groups was estimated to be 41⁄2 years. Over 60% of the groups disbanded within 3 years of formation. Groups perceived to be more effec tive and that were initiated early in the history of the organization were much less likely to disband. Members most commonly dropped out of a group because of time conflicts and difficulty traveling to meetings. Older members were less likely to drop out of a group. Implications of the findings for the survival and development of mutual help groups and organizations

Changes in Conventional Masculinity and Psychological Well-Being among Participants in a Mutual Help Organization for Men

C. Anderson, K. Maton, Christopher K. Burke, E. Mankowski, Laura M. Stapleton
The study modeled the theory of a mutual help organization, the ManKind Project, that masculinity harms men’s well-being and that men changing their masculinity through participation in the organization’s mutual help settings will improve well-being. The study hypothesized that conventional masculinity (i.e., adherence to masculine gender role norms and stereotypes) would decrease over time and mediate changes in psychological well-being among 128 U.S. participants in the organization (mid-Atlantic region, highly educated, mostly white, disproportionately gay/bisexual). Participants completed questionnaires once before and 3 times after initiation into the organization. Linear latent growth models fitted to the data showed that conventional masculinity decreased (p < .001) and partially mediated (p < .001) an increase (p < .01) in psychological well-being, supporting the

Introduces the part of a special issue on men’s groups that includes three studies conducted with the Mankind Project, a men’s mutual help organiza tion. Situates the articles within the history of the collaborative research partnership between the authors and the mutual help organization and in the literature on the health and social problems associated with the socialization of traditional masculinity. Directions for future research with mutual help groups for diverse men concerned about masculinities are suggested.

The Self-Help Dataset 1955-2000: An Introduction and Invitation

The aim of this article is to disseminate information to self-help scholars about a unique data source, the Self-Help Dataset 1955-2000, which is now publically available for research. This article explores the key sources of data used to construct the dataset and links the data from those sources to published papers addressing topics from the organizations and social movements literatures ranging from self-help founding and disbanding rates to legitimacy and competition. Reasons for constructing the dataset were twofold: to address the question of the origins and persistence of self-help in the United States and to establish a baseline set of measures researchers could use to monitor trends in the movement over time. The motivating question underlying database construction was to describe how self-help evolved from a handful of groups to a taken-for-granted way of organizing alternative healthcare delivery. To do so, we analyzed national self-help organizations and looked at how the social, political, economic, and cultural environment shaped the growth and persistence of the phenomenon. While studies examining these dynamics have focused on self-help as it arose in the United States, researchers with interests that span the continuum of national states, markets, and cultures are encouraged to further develop these data according to their scholarly perspective.

Adherence to the Social Model Approach in Philadelphia Recovery Homes

For many struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, the ability to get and stay clean is often jeopardized by untenable housing or unsupportive living environments. Recovery residences are designed to provide safe and supportive housing to help individuals initiate and sustain recovery. Despite promising research on Oxford HousesTM and Sober Living Houses in California, there are still significant gaps in the research on recovery residences and confusion in the treatment community over what constitutes a recovery residence. This article briefly reviews different types of recovery *This work was supported by funds from the Pennsylvania Department of Health (SAP #4100057685).

Expanding Knowledge of Peer-Based Mental Health Organisations: The Experience of Clubhouse

The special Clubhouse issues of this Journal (7(1) and this current issue, 2013) feature articles that review the development of a potent social intervention to mitigate the impact of the exclusion and discrimination experienced by many people who suffer from severe and persistent mental ill health. In this short recapitulation, I comment on the key ingredients of the model— the fundamental underpinnings, the organisational elements and the need for further research.
