The process and content of an online support group for college students with psychological problems
Pub Date : 2006-01-01 DOI: 10.2190/SH.5.4.F
E. Freeman, C. Barker, N. Pistrang
This study examines the usage of a website providing both information pages and an online support group for UK college students experiencing psychological or academic problems. It extends a previous paper (Freeman, Barker, & Pistrang, 2008) which reports on outcome data. Participants (N = 238) were given access to a website containing information pages about common student emotional and academic problems, and some (N = 142) were also given access to an online mutual support group. Content analysis of postings and monitoring of web page hit rates showed that participants accessed the information pages and online support group for help with a diverse range of both academic and emotional problems. The processes of the online support group were similar to those reported in previous studies of online support groups for other psychological problem types: the most common verbal responses were Self-Disclosure, Providing Information, and Providing Emotional Support. The findings suggest that online support plus information can be a viable method of facilitating self-help for psychological problems in the college student population.

Introduction to the Third of the Special Issues on Cross-Cultural Aspects of Self-Help/Mutual Aid

As Guest Editor for the special issues on the cross-cultural aspects of self-help/ mutual aid, I thank the authors and peer reviewers for their diligence and excellent work on the manuscripts. This third and final issue contains four articles, their authors and research sites representing three continents—Africa (Malawi), Europe, and North America. Several innovative features characterize this issue: the conceptualization of self-help, the methodology of studying groups, and a distinctive problem issue of economics. How is the self in self-help/mutual aid conceptualized? Who is the self? Must it always and inevitably be an individual person—as found in most of the articles published in this Journal. The European psychosocial tradition of researchers who study self help/mutual aid (see Borkman, 2006-2007) are more likely to include the community or other social units as the self in self-help (see e.g., Humble & Unell, 1989) than those in the North American psychosocial tradition. Similarly, the micro-credit and economics tradition of self-help research often includes the community when conceptualizing self-help. Three of the four articles in this issue implicitly or explicitly view the self in self-help/mutual aid as a collective unit, not an individual person. In the first article titled “Participatory Action Research as a Form of Mutual Aid and Self-Help in Malawi” by Vanessa Duren-Winfield and Liz Barber, the self in self-help is the Malawian learning community of teachers, students and U.S. researchers-teachers. In the second article by Jerome Seliger, Audrey Simons and Carl Maida titled “PromotoresFocused Screening and Education to Improve Diabetes Awareness and Self-Care

Cross-Cultural Gateway to Recovery: A Qualitative Study of Recovery Experiences in International AA Online Groups

This ethnographic case-study explored people’s use of online Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups with a global membership. The main objective was to explore AA members’ preferences for using online AA groups, or not. Main queries were: Do participants use only online AA groups or both face-to-face and online groups? If they use only online groups, how do they explain their preference? If they use both, how do they view the online alternative? Finally, how do the AA members experience the global membership in the online groups? Can they identify with each other? The empirical basis for the discussion comprises data from participant observation in two international online AA groups for 1 year, involving content analysis of discussion threads, and a limited number of e-mail interviews. The result of the analysis is presented as a summary of what is gained from participation in online vs. F2F AA groups. The discussion of emerging themes suggests that online AA members can easily identify with each other despite their cultural differences. The majority of AA members in this study seem to prefer a combination of face-to-face and online AA groups. The plethora of AA resources on the Internet also seems to have provided AA members the opportunity to “customise” their recovery program and support network in a way that suits their particular needs and life situations, and in ways that transcend their native culture.

It is the aim of this review to provide a survey of research on Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in health care with a special focus on SHGs for women with chronic muscular pain. The aim is not only to describe this field of research, but also to consider how this research relates to gender research as such. A variety of themes are examined: history, external factors that influence SHGs, internal aspects of SHGs, and gender research on SHGs. It was found that the gender perspective was relatively neglected. Our suggestion for further research notes that group members can produce new ways to manage their lives with the help of the interaction/exchange in the SHGs, regarding gender construction, knowledge, legitimacy and adaptation or transformation, and the position of activities in SHGs among societal norms and attitudes.

This study explored self-governing processes in a mutual-help recovery setting called Oxford House. Residents from Oxford Houses live in communal, same-sex rented houses without professional staff supervision. The present study analyzed behavioral data observed during business meetings at 29 Northern Illinois Oxford Houses (20 men, 9 women). At these meetings, residents discussed organizational operations and developed or modified rules and regulations for effective day-by-day setting operations. Findings indicated that ecological, house-level factors were significantly related to discussions on issues related to house operations, rather than resident-specific behaviors. The implications of these findings on empowering members in the setting are discussed. RECOVERY HOME MEMBERS Under modern managed care, private and public sector community and inpatient substance abuse facilities have reduced their services significantly. As an *Funding for this project was supported in part by NIAAA (grant number AA12218).

ASSESSING THE NEEDS AND STRENGTHS OF SELF-HELP GROUPS: OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET HEALTH CARE NEEDS

Over 15 years ago the Self-Help Network, a statewide clearinghouse for self-help groups, conducted a needs assessment of groups. Findings from that needs assessment provided direction for the activities of the Self-Help Network and insights for health and human service professionals. Health care has changed dramatically over the past 15 years, including interest in alternative treatments, higher costs, managed care, and greater use of Web-based information. It is difficult to determine what impact, if any, these changes have had on the needs of self-help groups. Consequently, the Self-Help Network conducted another asset and needs assessment of groups. Findings show that groups primarily need public awareness and referrals. Groups struggle with organizational issues such as finding meeting locations and shared leadership. The primary benefits of groups are the sharing between members, followed by information and education. Implications for health and human service professionals are discussed, including insights on how they can provide referrals and technical assistance to groups. Over the past half century, self-help groups have become a prominent component of healthcare systems across the world. Yet because of their grassroots nature, the existence of self-help groups was frequently only known through word of mouth.

In the late 90s there was a vogue for describing CEOs as storytellers. Their task was to tell the story of the organization firstly to the organization itself and secondly to the outside world. It was a process of invention, re-invention, and promotion. As a CEO who lived by narrative, this was a welcome development in realizing that beyond management speak the way we understood our lives was still simple and central. We told stories. In Beyond Depression, Christopher Dowrick (2004) offers a number of insights into the management of depression without medication. Personal narrative and attentive or active listening emerge as the key elements in effecting change. The emphasis is on creating a narrative that becomes the source of a solution and then becomes the solution itself.

The study of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) is historically marked by three stages: 1) the investigation of AOD-related social and personal pathologies, 2) the development of personal and social interventions aimed at resolving AOD problems, and 3) a focus on the prevalence and patterns of long-term recovery from AOD problems. This essay honors this transition from addiction and treatment paradigms to a recovery paradigm by exploring the growing varieties of pathways and styles through which people are resolving serious and persistent AOD-related problems. A review of scientific and mutual aid literature is used to catalogue variations in:  scope of recovery (primary and secondary chemical health and global health)  depth of recovery (partial, full and enriched)  types of recovery (abstinence-based, moderation-based, medication-assisted)  context of recovery initiation (solo, peer-assisted, treatment
